Southern Raised cannot say too often, how very grateful we are to live in this great United States of America. The question for this generation is, “Why are we great?” The answer will dictate how we live and the choices we make will affect generations to come. Looking back to this nation’s roots reveal that we are “great” because of what many before us called, Providence. The Webster 1828 dictionary defines Providence as,” The care and superintendence which God exercises over His creatures.” George Washington said in his First Inaugural Address,” No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than those of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency.” Someone recently asked, how have we drifted so far from the very One that is responsible for this country’s greatness? Could it be we are enjoying wells that we did not dig and vineyards that we did not plant and have lost a heart of gratefulness? I was listening to a preacher today and he was talking about losing our conscience towards God as a nation. We are slowly losing the idea that we are accountable to the One who has brought this nation to be and made it what it is. William Penn said, ” There is one great God and Power that hath made the world and all things therein, to whom you and I and all people owe their being and well-being, and to whom you and I must one day give an account, for all that we do in the world.” He is surely right! We pray that as a country we will remember that we are accountable to God. We are “One Nation Under God.” Psalm 127:1 says, ” Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” It is God that built this nation and the day we forget that, it will all be in vain.
The Bible speaks of passing on to the next generation the greatness and faithfulness of God, lest from one generation to the next we forget. The beliefs, convictions and standards of our country’s founders is nearly brushed aside while the REAL heart of these great individuals threatens to cease to pulsate within us today! The heartbeat that would risk all to come set foot on this soil, lose life, family or possessions, this heart puts God as the Providential Hand that has blessed and provided. This heart stays true and grateful to Him with every new day!!! I want to see this heart beat with a new zeal like never before on this Independence Day, there is too much at stake not to. Former President Ronald Regan captured what should also pulsate within each American heart, ” Freedom is never more than a generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it was once like in the United States where men were free.” May we never come to that state! Let us pass the message on. What are we founded on?…God. Who sustains and makes us great?…..God. Who has His hand of blessing and protection upon us?……God. In 1956 a new motto for this country was signed in by President Eisenhower, ” In God we Trust.” God is worthy of our thanks and praise this 4th of July…….may you all have a wonderful day celebrating liberty and giving thanks to the one who has endowed us with such a gift and IN GOD WE STILL TRUST!!!
