South Alabama Camp Meeting…..Changing Hearts and Lives for Eternity…….

South Alabama Camp Meeting!
South Alabama Camp Meeting!

..Recently we returned from the South Alabama Camp meeting and have so many stories, blessings and memories to share!  This congregation of dear folks go out of their way to make you feel loved and welcomed from the moment that you arrive!  This is  one of those old fashioned camp meetings with singing and praising the Lord and preaching that both lifts you closer to God and brings you to your knees in order to grow closer to Him.  Sometimes that is just what we need.  ………………………………………………………………………………………..

10th Anniversary of this amazing meeting!
10th Anniversary of this amazing meeting!

………..I would like to say a big heartfelt “thank you” to each and every pastor and evangelist that brought the Word of God to us during Camp Meeting!  Each message was power packed and life changing and I am grateful for such dedicated men of God!…………………….I heard preaching that told me that I am a soldier for the Lord and that “there is a cause!”  There is still a cause to stand for, so let us rise up and hold His banner high!  Was reminded to rest in my dear Saviour’s care.  He has never broken one promise or failed one of His children ever!  So, go to “sleep” knowing who holds you and who holds tomorrow.  I found cause to take hope and courage when I heard “it is not as bad as it seems!”  Things could be a lot worse!  God is good and blesses and takes care of us in the middle of seemingly bad situations.  Then the words of the old hymn echoed in my mind…”There is a Balm in Gilead.”  There is healing  at the cross of Jesus Christ and through Him alone.  Challenged to not forsake a deep and devoted prayer life not only for personal request but for individuals I may never meet, but only know the need.  The thought provoking question was asked…”What kind of legacy will you leave when this life is over?” ” What story and testimony are you leaving behind in this world?”  Then came that kind of preaching that folks say may hurt and take you to your knees, but is a necessity in a Christian’s life….We were all reminded to be real Christians….don’t wear masks…”costumes” or put on a front that is pretend…..Beware of becoming so good at knowing how to “play” church that you miss reality with God.  Stay real and close to Him and keep your nose in His Word…this was the challenge!  Powerful!…………………………………………………………………..

……………Pastor Billy Bevan is the man who had the vision for this camp.  We met Bro Billy a little over 2 years ago at a camp meeting in Arkansas.  Over the course of these 2 years our lives have been blessed and enriched by our friendship. Bro Billy and his sweet wife, Mrs. Gloria have become like adopted family to us!  Proverbs 27:17 rings so very true,”Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” They have certainly blessed and “sharpened” our lives!  I found this quote recently and could not agree more….. “There is a brotherhood within the body of believers, and the Lord Jesus Christ is the common denominator. Friendship and fellowship are the legal tender among believers. The friendships that are developed among Christians have a depth and reality that you will find nowhere else in the world!  God truly does send folks into your life along this earthly journey that are Heaven sent blessings.  They are used by God in unique ways to brighten our pathway and lighten our load.  We feel that Bro Billy and Mrs. Gloria are such gifts from God. Take a moment and think of those people in your life that are there in good times and bad, always bringing that ray of sunlight that was needed!

I am so grateful that Bro Billy had a heart and passion for this camp meeting’s conception 10 years ago!   I truly believe with all my heart that eternity alone will unveil the souls that were saved, the lives that were changed, spirits that were lifted and homes that were helped though the South Alabama Camp Meeting.  I want to thank Bro Billy and Mrs Gloria for their love and friendship that has meant more to us than words could ever express!!!  We love you both very much! Thank you Bro Billy and all the Sardis Church family for the work and heart you put into this meeting!  We love each of you very much!  ………………………………………………………………………………………………

………………………..Now…..the explanation for these two pics lies in the previous pics of Bro Billy’s “ORANGE” office!:):)  He for some “unknown” reason thought we were responsible for all that orange and blue stuff and figured he would make our last night of camp meeting very “special”!!!!:):)  We were up there doing the pre-service music and we were like 10 minutes or more into it and Sarah looks at me and mouths…”where is Bro Billy?”  He was nowhere to be seen and all that could flood our minds were the previous “threats” of somehow teaching us not to sabotage someones office in orange and blue!!!!   (That is assuming we actually were responsible:)  Sure enough….our fears were totally legitimate!!!  Here he comes a short time later down the center aisle of the church with  a straw hat with a large crimson band around it and a big “A” plastered on the front!!!!  Then he proceeds to share with the church how that very afternoon he discovered that he had been driving around town with an Auburn license plate on the front of his truck!!!  And…..once again…for some reason he immediately thought we did it!!!:):):)…..What do y’all think?????:):):)……………………………………………………………………………………

I think he loved every minute of this!!!.....I must admit it was funny:)....I cannot believe I said that!
I think he loved every minute of this!!!…..I must admit it was funny:)….I cannot believe I said that!

………Soooooo, you would think that would be enough “punishment” for someone who was not even really “convicted” of a crime!!!  But, that was the wrong thought for sure!!!!  We come out of a wonderful service at the nights end, only to find our table completely covered in Alabama Crimson!!!!  I mean decked out!!!!  I hate to admit that  it was funny……and IF we had been the ones decking out his office in orange and blue and IF we had been the ones to put the plate on his truck and those are big IF’S……then I could see that this was justifiable!!!!:):):)  Anyhow, this was quite an ending on the last night of camp meeting!!! …………………………………………………………………………………………

Lights, Camera and Action! Southern Raised shoots an EPK!

Shooting the Scarlet Cord
Shooting the Scarlet Cord

This last week found Southern Raised filming an Electronic Press Kit out in Nashville, TN!  We are so excited and look forward to sharing it with you in the near future!:)  I thought y’all would enjoy a behind the scenes look at the film shoot, until you get to see the real thing:)…..that is always my favorite part of a film:)….I love to skip to the “behind the scenes feature”!!!:)  We filmed with Billy Brown and Evidential Productions and have lots of fun stories and moments to share from this fun day!!!

Meanwhile…..Billy and his assistant, Lance, set up our first film scene.  We started with Scarlet Cord and I loved the setting!  The gorgeous home boasted lovely crystal chandeliers which we had in a couple scenes.

……………….Through this Electronic Press Kit you will see our hearts and why we do what we do and some of the inspiration that keeps us pressing on!  This is all about Jesus and sharing His message of love and salvation!  We feel honored to be able to serve our Saviour!  I heard a quote awhile back and it convicted me with the reality and truth it conveyed……it said……”No individual has any right to come into this world or leave it, without leaving behind them a distinct and legitimate reason for having passed through it.”  I want my life to have a purpose and our purpose and reason for living is Jesus Christ and His message!

…….The EPK is something that is useful for folks wanting to learn more about us as individuals and hear us as a band…………………………………………………………………………………

The interviews were a lot of fun and a lot of funny!!!  There were tongue tied moments and then there were those times you say something and before you finished you knew that it so did not come out sounding like what you planned!!!!……..Sooooo…..you say take 5!!!:)  During the interview we had opened  a door that led to the second story porch and Billy had positioned his camera in the door jam.  Mama had gone out on the porch to walk around and came back reporting that a swarm of bees had made a home in the eve of the porch and you could hear the swarm humming and buzzing!!!  We quickly decided to shut the door and move the camera all the way inside!  Southern Raised running from a swarm of bees would have made action packed behind the scenes footage!!:)

Hey there everybody!  I am very due for a new blog:) and I have lots of exciting stories and pics from our latest tour out on the East Coast!!!  I will give you a quick overview of the trip and then let you see it all in detail below!  Keep an eye out for some..”never before seen pics” in the blog!!!:):)…should be interesting:)   Southern Raised headed out to our first destination in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  We were participating in the Singing in the Sun Convention and showcased on Thursday afternoon.  Southern Raised was tremendously blessed and honored to be chosen to move on to the main stage that night!  This was a gift from our Father in Heaven and we thank Him for such a gift and wonderful time!  Southern Raised stopped off in Charleston, South Carolina for a day of sight seeing before heading to North Carolina.  This was one of the most beautiful and historic places that we all loved visiting so very much!  Sunday morning found us in Gibsonville, North Carolina and in Raleigh that evening.

…………………………………If you have never been to Charleston, South Carolina you really must go!!!  This was one of our favorite destinations ever!  It was a very quick walk through part of the town and dinner at a famed local restaurant!  Here are many pics of the beautiful, historic city!  If you go, you must eat at Jestine’s Kitchen, real southern cooking!…………………………………………………………………..

Waiting in line at Jestine’s Kitchen……it was sooooo worth the wait!!!

……………………………….The restaurant we ate at was called, Jestine’s Kitchen.  Be prepared for a line and a wait, but no worries…..they have benches built on the sidewalk for this very thing!!!  Apparently, long waits are very normal and quite common at this local restaurant that is quaintly positioned at an intersection in the middle of Charleston.  I realized the wait was common while taking my seat on the bench outside, when I looked into the window of the restaurant only to see a t-shirt that said, “I survived the line at Jestine’s!” Well, I can say the same now and I can also say it is worth the wait!…………………………………………………………………………………………….

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Acapella ready!

………………Big thank you to Pastor Rabon and all of Beacon Baptist for your love and warmth!….Pastor Rabon’s son, Phillip, preached the evening service.  Wow!  What a power packed, convicting message!  It was titled, “Manasseh is Watching.”  He took us back to the Old Testament and to the life of King Hezekiah.  Reminding us that little eyes are always watching and observing the choices, character and motives that we have and make in life.  He warned of hypocrisy and lack of stability in what you believe and standing firm therein.  Bro Phillip reminded us that although King Hezekiah was a godly man( 2 Kings 18;5-“He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.”), but his son grew up only to become a grief to God and a wicked king.  He pointed out some key times in Hezekiah’s life where wrong decisions were made, stands were not taken and hypocrisy raised it’s head.  All the while…..”Manasseh was Watching.”  I was very convicted that someone is always watching.  Little eyes that are learning and little lives that are being shaped today into what they will be tomorrow.  I can also be reminded  that a lost world is watching.  A lost world is looking.  A lost world is learning what Christianity and salvation are all about……just by watching….just by looking…..they may never ask a single question.  I may answer all they ever wondered by my actions.  That is a sobering thought.  I am convicted to go forward and live daily like…….  ” Manasseh is Watching.”………………………………….Thank you Bro Phillip for this message and for being a tool of God to reach hearts and lives!………………………………………………………………………….

Of Seasons and Times……………..

I wonder if y’all feel the same way I do:)……………………………….Do you have stories, places and funny moments you find pleasure in re-visiting no matter how many times you have been there?  No matter how many times you have heard a certain story and you know each turn and climax it thrills you to hear it again?  No matter how many times you have visited a certain location, every time you return it just feels right and special?  No matter that a funny story has brought tears to your eyes and made you laugh until your stomach muscles ache,  every time you tell it the tears come again and those muscles seemed almost toned by now?………………….I have many of these times in my life……more than I could tell.  One of those places that I always love to re-visit and somewhere I have grown up going is Silver Dollar City.  No matter how many times I walk into that park it always feels just like it did when I was 10 years old.  Maybe it is certain smells that take me back to my childhood. The smell of hot asphalt to this day makes me think of Silver Dollar City.  Or maybe it is the sweet aroma coming out of the taffy shop that lured us as children in for that “one piece of free taffy!”  Of course, it never really stopped at the “one piece of free taffy” and very soon we had those shiny little silver buckets in our hands collecting every imaginable variety of taffy!  Not just the traditional  favorites like banana, orange, cherry or anything sour (for Emily and Matthews taste buds:)  But we would venture out to the new and wild flavors!  Of course our little buckets filled much faster than we ever realized and before you knew it, we had enough taffy for a small army!!!  Or maybe it is the shops that remind me of special times.  The glass shop where we would stand and watch the artisan make beautiful works of art.  Perhaps it was the Homestead Cabin and the Homestead Pickers and the music that I recall from my childhood and their friendship that has grown  through the years.  Maybe it is the rides that with each wild and crazy turn seem to take  me right back to when I was ten and in that same seat! Whatever combination of these…..or maybe all of these……………none the less it takes me back and feels so right…..I love it!  This last weekend we were back at Silver Dollar City for another 3 day gig.  What a wonderful time once again!

Ready for the day!

Ok:)…so this has nothing to do with Silver Dollar City, but I must share it with y’all!  As a musician I sometimes have these dreams that are simply nightmares of what you would never want to happen on stage!!!  I mean…..these can be real nightmares!!!  Just to give you an idea of the content of these dreams……it has involved………suddenly being unable to sing, almost missing a concert, band members not playing at most important times, me being suddenly unable to slap the bass, band members being in the wrong outfits and a show is about to begin…………I mean bad stuff!!!  So……the other night I have this dream that I am playing my bass and suddenly like out of nowhere my bass just like starts falling apart!!!!  The neck falls off and then the back…..suddenly the glue was like not glue at all!!!  Here I was with my bass in pieces!!!  It was  terrible!……..I think I could write a book of all these “musician nightmares” and it would be one wild ride!!!  I must remember these are just dreams!!!:):)

Warming up in the morning

…………………………………………………………………………………Now on Friday morning our first show was rather damp!  It was actually raining most of the show.  I so admire the brave and sweet people who sat out there with ponchos and umbrellas for our set!!!  Thank you!  Thankfully it cleared up and the rest of the day was absolutely gorgeous!  Saturday morning came and so did the rain!  Here we were again with our first show with chilly temps and rain showers!  Once again I thank those dear folks who gathered around in the rain to listen to our show!  Saturday cleared up  and we had an amazing  day at Silver Dollar City!

……….  You know…..friends are a dear and special gift!  Something God gave us to help us in this life……encourage, enjoy, laugh with and spend special moments with.  Something most special indeed.  Want to share a poem on friendship……………………..

“Glad to Call You Friend”

I stopped today in a quite place

secluded and alone.

I couldn’t help but see your face

something warmed me to the bone.

What was the warm sensation

swelling up deep within?

What absent conversation

left me wistful yet again?

I laughed when I thought of it

of stories shared and smiled.

Though no one heard me laughing

and no one with me smiled.

Then I looked beside me

at nothing but the air.

In this moment I could see

a treasure beyond compare.

My friend you’re what was missing

 a gift from God above!

You laugh, you love, your listening

sharing memories bound by love.

My friend, I now must tell you

please listen yet again.

You are a gift from God in Heaven

and I’m sure glad to call you friend!

-Lindsay Ann Reith-

Mr. Don Heston invited us out to eat at a local restaurant and we sure had a wonderful time together!  We were joined by Nonny and Pappy and Mr. Heston’s son, Josh.  It was truly a wonderful evening of relaxing and laughing together.

Nonny and Pappy in between our shows……we love y’all!

………………………….Life is not always good times and smiles, often in this world we are met with heartache and tears.  Southern Raised felt this very close to home during our weekend at Silver Dollar City.  Sarah  had a wonderful little pet Dachshund named Gretchen that was about 15 years old.  I am sure you all know how close a little pet can grow to your heart and the pain of saying goodbye is harder than you could express, unless you have been through it.  Sarah was up all night with Gretchen and  on the morning of our last day at Silver Dollar City at about 7am, little Gretchen passed away.  She died in Sarah’s arms and our whole family gathered around.  This was so very difficult and painful all by itself, but everyone  having to gain composure to head out and play at Silver Dollar City was an added challenge.  Death is something that is so painful, even if it is a dear little family pet, and I so look forward to the day in Heaven when there will be no death at all.  No death of family and friends and no death of even the little pets we hold dear.  It is amazing for me to think back to the creation of the world and the Garden of Eden.  God created this beautiful world and He made humans to care for it, but the Bible says He created the animals for the pleasure of man.  God knew the joy they would bring, the companionship they would give, the protection and the love they would devote to you.  He knew this would bring us joy and pleasure in this life and He made them as a gift to us…….just like an extra…..” I know this will make you  happy.”   So, it is no surprise that when these companions pass, it hurts, hurts deeply……………………….I wanted to share a pic of this difficult time we just experienced………………………………………………..

Steppin’ back and thanking our audience at the closing of a show……..

In concluding, I think this blog reminds us that life has trials, tears and hard times.  We have all been there.  But there are precious gifts and happy memories that God showers on us along the way.  Like friends, music, places we enjoy and memories we treasure…….just to name a very few.  I thank God for being with me through the tears and blessing me with sweet gifts!  Thank you to all of those who came out and were a part of our  weekend at the City!!!  We love each one of you and look forward to seeing y’all later this year on down the road!!  This next week finds us in Arkansas and Mississippi!  Keep checking in and I will keep y’all updated on this trip down South!  God bless y’all!…………Lindsay

What Wondrous Love is This!

I have often heard it said, “Live in the light of the Resurrection!”  Do we ever stop and think of the tremendous love that drove our Savior to pay the great price for our sins and because He did we are now offered life everlasting……and the tomb where He laid…..well friend!…….It is empty!!!!  We want to wish each and every one of you a very blessed and happy Resurrection Sunday!!!  This time of the year, we are enamored by the abundance of life.  The grass is turning a gorgeous shade of emerald, tiny buds look nigh to pop out of their little winter coats, the spring blossoms that are brave and bold have peeked out of the ground and put on a brilliant display of color in their blooms, baby animals are entering the world with the new vigor of life!

Baby goslings…….new life

Here we are amidst all the beauty of life and in the middle of this we have one of the most beautiful, wonderful celebrations ever for a christian and what is it about?……..Life!!!  It is about our Savior who died an agonizing death for wretched sinners, but broke the chains of death once and for all after three days and nights!  It is a reason to rejoice, our Master, Lord and King is not dead, He lives and forever intercedes for us in Heaven!!!  This is all about life……a Savior that lives and because He lives we can now live forever in Heaven with Him, if we accept him as Savior.

Wonder of Life

Herein is a question……do we live every day like our Savior paid for our eternal life with His very life?  Do we live like He is alive but remember that it took His death to open heaven to us?  This wonderful life that we as christians live is a beautiful gift!  We serve and live in the care of a Risen Savior!!!

I want to share something from speaker and historian, Ray Vander Laan, on life and resurrection.  Ray Vander Laan has studied Jewish culture and customs and has taken over 10,000 people with him on his study tours of Israel, Turkey and Egypt.   His insight into the Jewish culture and customs brings much of the underlying symbolism that our Lord used and understood to life for us.  I hope the following thoughts from Mr. Vander Laan bless and encourage your hearts…………………………………………………………..

Lilac Blossoms

In that day, when a young man wanted to marry a young woman, the young man and his father would go the the girls house.  They would then sit down with the girl and her father and the four of them would negotiate.  Part of the negotiation was settling on a “bride price.”  The father of the bride would often ask a great deal of money or physical things, because his daughter was a valuable possession. It would be reasonable to say that the “bride price” might rival what you would pay for a new home.  When the price was finally settled, the young man’s father would pour a cup of wine and hand it to his son.  The son would then offer the cup to the girl.  When he extended it to her he would say these words, ” This cup I offer to you.”  In essence he was saying, ” I love you, and I offer you my life.”  At this time the girl had a time of decision.  She could either reject his gift, or she could take the cup and lift it to her mouth and drink.  By drinking of this cup, she was saying, ” I accept your life and I give you mine.”  Grooms often did pay very high prices for their brides, but probably not many thought they would ever really give their lives for their bride.  It is a somber moment when we realize that Jesus paid a bride price for you and me.  The price was so high that in the Garden of Gethsemane He prayed, Matt 26:39- “Let this cup pass from me.”  The “cup” of the bride price.  Yet, He paid this price so you and I could be His spiritual bride.  Now He says to you, “I love you and I want to be your husband.”  – Thoughts compiled from information by Ray Vander Laan

What Wondrous Love Is This
By: American Folk Hymn

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

The above stanza is from a hymn that echos my heart’s emotions after understanding the above culture and symbolism.  How amazing, such a love that would pay a bride price that cost His life blood, for a bride, that at the time did not love or appreciate the sacrifice and price that was paid.   Let us never lose the wonder and amazement at such a “Wondrous Love.”

Bridals Wreath Spirea in the Spring

Ray Vander Laan also has some insightful thoughts on the tomb, the empty tomb of Jesus!-

God told His people, do not mix unrelated things.  Do not mix two kinds of seeds, do not mix two different animals in pulling a plow and do not mix a saved and unsaved person in marriage.  This also carried over into burial.  You could not place an unrelated person in your tomb and if you did it could no longer be used by you.  Joseph of Arimethea had a tomb that the Bible says had never been used.  This man’s tomb was likely worth thousands of shekels in value.  The love this man demonstrated to Jesus by taking this tomb and giving it forever away was in incredible act of love and devotion.  We should be challenged today, in our lives to live as Joseph did.  Say to the Lord, whatever I have is yours Lord.  Joseph held nothing back, but gave away a costly possession out of pure love.

(Mat 28:1-6. In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.  And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.  His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:  And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.  And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.  He is not here: for he is risen, as he said.  Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

Many people think that the stone was rolled away to let Jesus out.  But, that is not the case.  The stone was rolled away to let the disciples look in.  Jesus was not bound in that tomb by a stone, but by His willingness to give His life.  Often, we do not live like the tomb is empty.  We do not live like the power that raised Jesus from the dead is offered to you and me as His children.  We will meet a lot of people in life who think the stone is still there.  We must be an instrument of God to roll away the stone for them and help them realize that Jesus is alive forever!!!  Let us live like the stone is rolled away!!!- Thoughts taken from Ray Vander Laan

New Life

The above reminds me that the Empty Tomb and our Risen Savior goes far beyond celebrating just an Empty Tomb and Risen Savior…………it must go past that and reach me.  Reach me and grip me with the reality that there is a lost world that must hear the news, “The stone has been rolled away, the tomb is empty!!!”  There is a relationship with my Risen Savior that I must develop daily and always bear in mind that I have pledged my love and life to him……He paid the bride price for me and for you, the agonizing price of His death and now our Lord extends the “cup of salvation” to any and all who will drink and say, “I accept you, your love and your gift of life and here is my love and my life in return.”  Have you said that to the Resurrected Lord……….If not, friend, He is holding the cup of salvation out to you now……..why don’t you accept it?  Spring is a time of not only life, but new beginnings…..if you have not accepted the gift of eternal life, why don’t you start with a new beginning by making Jesus Lord of your life?  It is a free gift that He has paid for dearly.  Let me share a little bit from a book by Cary Schmidt called “Done”-

“Jesus’ payment for your sin was not  partial- it was a full payment.  I once shared this with a man who seemed to struggle with understanding the concept of a “full payment.”  After what seemed like hours of trying to get through to him, it was like the light bulb came on in his head.  He smiled and said, ” All my life I’ve understood that Jesus paid for my sins, but I’ve believed that it was two-way- like a 50/50 proposition.  In other words, Jesus did His part and I still have to do my part.  But if I understand what you’re saying, then Jesus did it all, and I can’t do anything. It’s 100% Jesus and 0% me!”  Exactly.  This is not a 50/50 proposition. Jesus didn’t pay for part of your sin and leave you to pay for the rest.  He didn’t say ” It is almost finished.”  He didn’t say ” It is partially paid.”  he said” It is fully paid.”  Even religions that claim to “believe in Jesus” seem to teach that He only paid for part of our sin.  Many teach that there is still much that you must DO to make atonement for your sin- as though Jesus made partial payment and you have to make the rest.  This simply isn’t the message of the Bible.  Jesus paid it all!  DONE.  Friend, are you understanding this?  You don’t have to pay for your own sin.  A miracle of divine intervention happened!  God stepped in and took your punishment- all of it!………………”It is finished”….-John 19:30″- Cary Schmidt

If you have accepted this cup and realize the price for your sin was paid in full, then celebrate not just today, but every day, ………………….the stone has been rolled away and let us live in the light of the resurrection!!!! I want to close by sharing more verses from this great Hymn and I do hope your heart swells and sings this song to the Sweet Savior, who paid the ultimate bride price, and says “I love you.”…….Will you sing this to Him?

What Wondrous Love Is This
By: American Folk Hymn

What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this
That caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul!

When I was sinking down, sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down, sinking down,
When I was sinking down
Beneath God’s righteous frown,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul for my soul,
Christ laid aside His crown for my soul.

To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb,
Who is the great I AM,
While millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing,
While millions join the theme, I will sing.

And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on;
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on.
And when from death I’m free
I’ll sing His love for me,
And through eternity I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
And through eternity I’ll sing on.

Thankful for that Wondrous Love!

KASU Bluegrass Monday Concert Series at the Historic Collins Theater!

Southern Raised at the Collins Theater!

Historic structures and buildings from years gone by  carry with them, not simply charm and years of use, but stories that echo through their halls.  Their stories are never really complete, they just build and are added to  by future generations.  Never could this ring more true than with a historic theater.  Songs and acts from years gone by, have made this charming structure what it is today.  Enhanced by years, 88 years to be exact in the case of the historic Collins Theater, it holds a special touch that could never be fully reproduced in a new and modern structure.  You have to wonder and think when you enter such a building what the ” walls and curtains” have heard through the past 88 years?  Who has walked across the wooden planks of the stage and what songs reverberated through the large and gorgeous room?  Southern Raised found themselves on this particular stage last Monday night.  Once again, another chapter in the story of this theater began to be written on March 25.  It was truly like stepping back in time………..the original gilded molding, the original tin ceiling.  It was wonderful to see the halls of such a place fill once again, settling in for an evening of music and laughter and ………….another chapter in the Historic Collins Theater.

Another Chapter in the story of the Historic Collins Theater

From the time we arrived, we were treated with the gracious hospitality and kindness of Mr. Marty Scarbrough!  After loading in all our gear and doing a sound check, Mr. Scarbrough took us down to a local cafe for dinner.  It was in the 30s and a brisk wind was rather persistent…..so this made for a vigorous walk down the block!  The cafe was so quaint and as I understand it, they are a special part of the KASU Bluegrass Concert Series!  This cafe is normally open only for breakfast and lunch, but on the Monday nights of the Concert Series, they open up for folks to come in and eat, visit and then head down to the Collins Theater for the concert!  Upon entering the cafe, we were warmly greeted with southern hospitality and conversations with folks enjoying dinner before the concert.   The entire evening had a warm and old fashioned flare that was so very refreshing!

I thought we would do something different!:):)…………I don’t believe we have really done very many pics of us getting ready for a concert!…..So, here are some pics of us in the dressing room  prepping for the concert!:)……………….

Matt did get a little “mirror time”!!!!

Sarah doing vocal warm ups in the dressing room……I know:)…..this looks odd!:)……just ask her about it in person sometime!!!…………..it really does help!!!

We kicked the evening off with a 45 minute set followed by a brief intermission and then another 45 minute set!  The crowd seemed ignited from the first note and interjected throughout the set with encores and encouragement!!!The crowd was alive and well in Paragould, Arkansas!  The theater seats 541 and we played to a wonderfully enthusiastic, energetic and encouraging packed house!!! We had a great time together!

Southern Raised and Silver Dollar City

Smokey haze drifting from a blacksmith shop down main street, smells of BBQ chicken, kettle corn and wood fires, 1880’s structures making statements of our past and our heritage and let us not forget……….sweet strains of Ozark Mountain music instantly flooding your ears!  If you are seeing Silver Dollar City in your mind…then you are absolutely correct!  This 1880’s theme park in Branson, Mo. has been a place we have grown up and I can promise, many precious and fun filled memories happened right there!  So………it is a pure joy and honor to come back now as musicians, sharing this Ozark Mt. music that we grew up listening to!  This  weekend marks a 3 day gig at Silver Dollar City…..WOW!  What an amazing time we had!  We played opening day and the weather was just simply made to order!!!  Temps in the 70s and sun beaming down!:)…..alas! It ended with a grand finale on Sunday of 38 degrees and a steady rain!!!:)…it was not very far into the day that we  went home with all shows canceled due to the weather…..but, I have lots of pics to share from a wonderful weekend at Silver Dollar City!!!

Southern Raised at Silver Dollar City!!!

We played on the Gazebo Stage with 4 sets a day.  Thank you to all of our very dear friends and fans that came out to hear us this last weekend!  We love all of you!

What gorgeous weather and great times!….Here is a view of the Gazebo Stage

We got to visit with our dear friend and mentor..Mr. Greg Bailey.  He has contributed, encouraged and taught us more in our musical career than we could ever thank him for….I am a firm believer that God brings certain people into your life at certain seasons and uses them to bring you to a new level or perhaps move  you in that direction….Mr. Bailey is one of those individuals that God brought  early, early in our music and He used this dear man to begin molding and working with the very raw beginnings of our bluegrass musical efforts…..He is one of those individuals who always seems to give and make himself  available to help another.  Sarah witnessed one occasion where a  little boy exuberantly came running up to Mr. Bailey after one of the Homestead Picker’s shows and asked for help learning the mandolin!  Mr. Bailey went and got a chord chart and began investing in yet another life……..this selfless giving is truly inspirational, may we all aspire to this……..We love you Mr. Bailey!

Daddy and our dear friend Mr. Don Heston visiting at the Gazebo

……………Thank you Mr. Don for the blessing you were to us this weekend!  Kindness as simple as walking up with cool water bottles after a set and handing them to us or the generous gift of taking us out to dinner, but we treasure your friendship above all!!!  We love and appreciate you so very much!………………………………………………………………….

Say Cheese!

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Southern Raised and our sound man, Brad…..thanks Brad for an awesome job!

……………………………………………………………………………..On Sunday came that “grand finale” 38 degrees and lots of rain!  The first show was canceled and then it was a matter of waiting to see if the noon show could go on depending on what the weather did in the next couple hours!  So…..our whole family went to have breakfast at a restaurant.  Now……when we entered, the waitress began quickly clearing a table that was dirty when many clean ones were all around as she said, “let me clean this real quick!”  Unfortunately, we didn’t think anything of it!:)….Come to find out, there is one table in that restaurant that has a very unusual way of gradually raising itself up at such a slow rate that you never notice until……..well….until….Emily looked at me and said…”Look at Lindsay!!!  She looks so low!” and Daddy suddenly realized as well, as he began to look around!!!  I began to realize that yes…I was low….very low!!!…..matter of fact my head was kinda just sticking up above the table!!!……When we realized what was happening we all died laughing…and I mean really laughing!!!:):)…..Sarah and I were literally crying!!!  You would have had to have been there to really get a full grasp of this!  Now……I suppose I could tell all of you what table this was and where it is located…………but:):)  I think I shall let y’all have the great memory and laughter and tears that comes with experiencing this!!!!  Just take note if your waitress says, “Let me clean this table real quick!”:):)

Our special table!:)…..Please note the height!:)………..now don’t be scanning the room for landmarks so you can find it when you go!!!:)!!

Well………………sadly, as I said…all 4 shows were called off on Sunday!  Here are pics of us on this rainy March day in the Ozarks!

Wanted to share this poem we came across……..I shared some pics and stories in the above blog of Nonny and Pappy, Mr. Bailey and Mr. Heston  that I feel have exhibited the character of kindness over and over again……………………………………………….

Kindness

— • —

I am stuck on a conundrum, and it’s making me reflect,
About a troubling weakness, and a character defect.
It’s one that often plagues me, and it plagues some friends of mine,
I’m speaking of the painful message sent when we’re not kind.

The greatest act of kindness in all of history
Was modeled by the Savior while hanging from a tree:
“Forgive them Father,” was His cry, “they know not what they do.”
In those few words He demonstrated kindness pure and true.

He could have said, “Forgive them,” and then let the matter stand.
He could have just ignored them, as He hung there by His hands.
But instead He showed them kindness, by taking up the case
Of wretched hypocrites and fools who merited disgrace.

It’s easy to show kindness when there’s nothing on the line.
It’s easy to be generous to those who treat you kind.
It’s easy to be kindly to the beautiful and handsome;
It’s easy to think kind thoughts when invited to a mansion.

But when you can show kindness to those who want your hide,
Or those have betrayed you to save themselves, then lied,
Or if your act of kindness gets you nothing but a loss,
Then you’ve an inclination of Christ’s wording on the Cross.

Kindness is how and why you love your drooling little brother.
Kindness is the way you sit beside your aged mother.
Kindness is showing mercy on a loved one in despair.
Kindness is forgetting your own hurts, to show them that you care.

There are some folks who act kindly, when they have something to gain.
There are others who feign kindness, when hiding their own blame.
There are some who are selective in the kindness that they show.
And others who are only kind to certain folks that they know.

There’s something very ugly when a good man acts unkind;
But before you judge him harshly, keep this one thing in mind:
You too have been quite unloving, unthoughtful, maybe cruel,
And if you hope for mercy, don’t forget the golden rule.

Yes, there’s been enough unkindness on everybody’s part,
That now would be the perfect time to call for a fresh start.
It’s time to think right kindly of the loved ones you call friend,
The way you hope they think of you when you’re feeling at the end.

’Cause the precious few who treasure kindness deep within their heart.
And even when they are hurt by others, always play the part
Of being so truly, deeply wholly, passionately kind,
Are the folks that touch your heartstrings and are always in your mind.

You will meet with many prophets, and with mercies not a few,
You will walk with those hospitable, and charitable too.
You will learn from the diligent, and from some humility,
But to meet a truly kind man, is to glimpse eternity.
